HELP STOP FURTHER OIL EXTRACTION

Update from Carbon Brief: A vote on proposed UK legislation that would “maximise North Sea oil and gas production” has been delayed, the Times reports. According to the paper, the bill was due to receive its second reading last night. However, it reports that previous business overran, and the government’s deputy chief whip, Marcus Jones, said it “would not be right to give MPs little more than 45 minutes to debate the plan”. Jones expects the vote to take place within the next two weeks, the newspaper says.

Please contact local MP James Cartlidge or other MPs, ministers - there are quite a few conservative MPs who are unhappy with this bill as it welches on UK’s climate commitments. E.g.:

This Bill has disastrous environmental implications. Consistent and respected research demonstrates that we have to stop extracting fossil fuels if we are to have any chance of preventing global temperatures rising by more than 1.5°C.

Having built the wealth of this country on fossil fuels we should now lead the rest of the world by example and reduce the amount of fossil fuels that we are putting into the international markets. None of the justifications for granting more licences stands up as shown by your own party members Lord Deben and Ashok Sharma.

Hadleigh Environmental Action Group, with its 300 members, has found that an increasing number of people are worried about climate change and want to see the Government taking stronger action. We are dismayed by your Government’s support for fossil fuels through this Bill.

Please vote against this Bill.

Even as conservative an organization as the International Energy Agency has found that “No new oil and natural gas fields are needed“.

Recent research published in the prestigious journal Nature found that  60% of existing oil and gas reserves must be left in the ground if the world is to have even half a chance of preventing global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5ºC.

The UNEP’s production gap report demonstrated that between now and 2030 global production of oil and gas must decline by 4% and 3% respectively, with developed economies such as the UK reducing supply most rapidly.

Arguments that oil and gas are needed for UK energy energy independence are spurious. Oil and gas are traded on international markets.

If the UK wishes to be energy independent, then largescale investment in energy efficiency, which can also help with the cost of living crisis, and in renewable energy, are what will help future-proof the UK’s energy security.

 Please vote against this Bill.

In days, 6 young climate heroes will face off against 32 governments in a historic battle to protect their rights from climate chaos. They are ready to put up a brave fight against an army of government lawyers resisting urgent emission cuts – a tidal wave of support would really fire them up as they march into court and show the world is watching. CLICK TO STAND WITH THE KIDS

Dear friends,

Raging wildfires scorched entire forests in their country, killing over 100 people. Cláudia, Catarina, Martim, Sofia, André and Mariana are growing up with heat waves spiraling out of control, watching in horror as the ongoing reality of climate chaos inches closer to home than ever.
But they’re not giving up. They are taking 32 governments to one of the world's most powerful courts. If they win, all those countries will be legally forced to cut their carbon emissions and phase out fossil fuels. They are facing an army of government lawyers who hope this case will fly under the radar. After years of preparing for this historic moment, these climate heroes need to know they are not alone. Avaaz will bring our voices to the youth and project messages across the court, so everyone can see that the world is watching:

The European Court of Human Rights is extremely selective about the cases it hears – and yet, the judges have fast-tracked this one. That's how critically important this is.This trial could force a swathe of powerful European governments to slash carbon emissions and give huge momentum to other climate cases hitting the courts around the globe! Because governments’ climate inaction is a human rights crisis, these kids are standing up to protect themselves from the climate emergency. And they wouldn’t be here without Avaaz members like you. Together we helped pay for these kids’ powerhouse legal team and funded ground-breaking research showing how government behavior is linked to climate anxiety in young people.
Now they need our help once more, will you stand with the climate heroes before they go to court?
