What’s going on in Hadleigh…
There’s lots of wildlife living right alongside us in Hadleigh so we thought we should put it altogether in one spot! If you have webcam footage of what the wildlife is doing in Hadleigh right under our noses, then just email it to us.
We hope to establish a new 1.4km ‘wildlife corridor’ in the town and involve the people who live along the route.
Bat Group
Hadleigh Bat Group has had a busy summer. Having received over 30 reports of sightings in and around Hadleigh we focused our evening bat walks on these buildings and localities. Using our bat detectors and recording equipment, under the expert eye of Martin Duffell, we enjoyed hearing and seeing different species. This information is being pulled together and will feed into national and local bat conservation databases.
We found 8 species of bat and identified the best locations for bats locally. The best places are those with water, on the edge of woods and where there are lots of flying insects and moths. Toppesfield Bridge and Wolves Wood were especially fruitful. Thanks to a donation from the Thrift Shop and a grant from Babergh we are able to buy better recording equipment ready for next year’s survey.
The Bat Group has also been building and install bat boxes with plans to make more and sell these to raise funds.
CAN YOU HELP US WITH OUR BAT SURVEY?
Do you think you have bats roosting in your property? Are there lots of bats flying round your garden? Are there places where you often see bats? Hadleigh Bat Group is doing a survey of bats in Hadleigh and is looking for places where bats are regularly seen. The group, led by our local expert, would visit at dusk and, using our detectors, would try and identify the species and count them.
Please let us know. If you’d like to learn more about bats and take action to protect them, come and join us. Contact us by email (you can use the Get Involved page to send a message) or via Facebook Eco Hadleigh. Thanks everyone!
